The dragonkin Avisk was obsessed with dreams. He believed they were the key to unlocking the true power of the mind. Nightmares, especially, fascinated him. In the folds of a dream he placed powerful creatures in the hope that the dream would infect them, somehow, making them easier for him to possess.
He forged each of the crucibles after an archetype of nightmares, strengthening them with the power of the collective unconscious from a variety of species. A rare dragonkin that considered the minds of others races, not just his own.
A common nightmare is that feeling of helplessness. That no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, you are destined to failure. A nightmare so powerful that it seeps into the waking world, inflicting people with imposter syndromes, paranoia and jealousy.
This key is that feeling crystallised and used to shape the Nightmare Crucible. Alas the creatures within are not quite as helpless as Avisk hoped.
