You could easily mistake the kalphite worker for a dumb bug, and for the most part you’d be right. But, that’s only because you are thinking with a human mind, one comprised of neurons and hard-wired for self-preservation. The kalphite mind is a different beast entirely. Whilst they are individual entities, with their own complex set of neurons, axons and other complicated sciency sounding words, their consciousness is also a collection of pheromone trails, high-frequency chittering, and the strange sort of nonsense only insects understand. The result is an individual that is connected to a great whole. Like an arm that can think by itself… which is a horrible thought - let’s not dwell on it. The worker is the lowest caste of the kalphites, though it’s not really a status thing. Their entire existence is to gather food, harvest materials, and construct bigger and better hives for the queen’s delectation. Unfortunately, that does not mean they won’t attack you if you threaten their hive. They will with as much vigour as they can manage. They care little for themselves: only the hive matters, and they will defend it with their lives.
