It's not entirely clear why a staff helps channel magic. Druids would claim that it was because they were working with nature, aligning the magic spell through the plant's systems. Members of the Wizard's Guild argued that it wasn't that the wood itself was special but that they worked as a focus, helping to channel the mind of the wizard.

The inclusion of rune essence in a staff's design is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and artistry involved. This essence, often crushed into a fine powder and dispersed throughout the wood's careful grooves, creates a magical circulatory system within the staff. In this way, the staff becomes a living entity, with the wizard as its beating heart, channelling power through its veins to unleash upon foes.

A staff is rarely helpful for less violent magic. They are brute force weapons, where magic is forced into elemental blasts, obliterating the target. More subtle spells rely on the caster's will and are powered directly by their magical skill.
