It was the dwarves who first discovered adamant: a metal so strong and powerful that it could turn aside almost any other blade. It was hard to work with and difficult to refine, so it saw little use in the early ages.
Karibdos was the obstacle between the rest of Ashenfall and a slow, defeated, trudge home. Malgo refused to allow the latter. He studied adamant carefully, experimenting with techniques and styles none bothered with before, even infusing it with a little magic. In doing so, he discovered the strength of the material.
When the expedition faced Karibdos again, it was in suits of solid adamant and glistening green blades ready to strike. They fell into the beast’s great maw, but rather than a delicious dwarven meal, Karibdos found its teeth shattering against their armour and its ancient hide torn apart from flashing blades of green metal.
With Karibdos dead and gone, Malgo and his team continued deeper into the region, vanishing into legend. For those who make the desert their home, none have witnessed anything like Karibdos again… though, perhaps, they simply haven’t dug deep enough.
