It was the dwarves who first discovered adamant: a metal so strong and powerful that it could turn aside almost any other blade. It was hard to work with and difficult to refine, so it saw little use in the early ages.
As Malgo and his expedition headed into the deserts of Ashenfall, they found wonderous new ores, materials and treasures that promised to expand their knowledge and understanding by leagues. They also found Karibdos, the devourer.
It was a great beast that lay within the sands; some dread creature that should never have existed. It was buried beneath the region, massive and hungry and, as the expedition approached, it opened wide its maw and attempted to swallow the entire group whole.
With quick thinking and forgotten spells, Malgo summoned vines for the expedition members to grasp. Many failed and were consumed by the great vortex in the sand that was Karibdos.
Though they struck back, their arrows and spells were too weak to pierce its hide and Karibdos simply returned to its slumber, waiting for the expedition to cross its path again.
