A garou hunter called Mayev was the first in Ashenfall to wear the skin of a red dragon, though she did so not out of malice, but in respect for a dear friend. To the garou, the hide of a slain foe is a mark of great pride, and the bones of a warrior are worn with great honour.
Dragons are not pets. They’re violent creatures, prone to random acts of aggression, driven by a rage that burns in their very soul. Still, Mayev was patient and she lured the dragon hatchling away from the corpse of its parent and out into the desert sands. Moonlight transformed the desert from gold to glittering silver, yet the ruby-red scales of the dragon seemed brighter than before.
Over the days, weeks and months to come, she kept the dragon secret. She brought it scraps of food, and kept it company on lonely days, and it came to see her not as a parent, not as a master, but as a friend. She saw him as the same. She named him Vakar – the flame-wrought song – and they would hunt together.
Over time, they knew each other’s strengths and could balance out their weaknesses. They hunted stronger prey, earning the respect of her tribe with the offcuts. Life was set to be everything they had both dreamed – until they met the KotHaar, and it all turned to ash.
