Although the name may be sinister, the robes and the people who wear them are not automatically evil.

Brynmoor had a string of so-called 'dark wizards'. Most were little more than bandits with a penchant for magic. The guards were sufficient for dealing with the majority of troublemakers, but a small group did cause a real upset. They were members of the Children of Shadows, a Zamorakian cult that began spreading through the population. The cult fed on distrust, paranoia and greed — some very human traits. Among their number were three apprentices of the Wizards' Guild, who were frustrated by having not received the promotions they felt they deserved.

In their quest for power, the Children of Shadows stumbled upon ancient vaults; repositories of the dragonkin's long-forgotten secrets. Here, they discovered the remnants of a forbidden text, a relic of immense power. Driven by their arrogance, they chose to follow its instructions, unaware of the horrors they were about to unleash.
